Doe's has the distinction of being the only resturant group (there are three of them) in the Lowcountry to headline Middle Eastern foods. When I came to Charleston from a city with a huge Middle Eastern population I was delighted. However this is not "Sitoo's cooking". The hummmus is ok but the Kibbee is not good at all (no sense of mediterranean seasoning). Of course, I have to admit that my expectations were obviously too high. The restaurant has to accommodate local tastes, which may or may not rise to truly Middle Eastern flavors. And it goes without saying that true pita and other mediterranean flat-breads simply don't exist in the area.
On balance, Doe's is ok. The food is not bad, just not authentic. The people are pleasant and at least the menu tries to be genuine as well as cator to health-food lovers. It'll do until a true Middle Eastern restaurant comes along. |
