Mastman's Kosher Deli Jun 1st, 2005
Webster defines the word "Delicatessen" as follows: ready to eat food products (as cooked meats and prepared salads); a store where delicatessen are sold.
Your Humble Servant defines a delicatessen as follows: Mastman's!
Located on the corner of Hertel and Colvin, in lovely downtown Burbank, oops I mean; historic, scenic, North Buffalo, Mastman's is a genuine old time deli.
So given this backdrop is it any wonder your triumphant trio of troubadours, traveled to try the tastiest treat this trio tasted?
Anyway, we arrived on time to find our, beloved, Commissioner a little late as is his usual. Brother Rice and I had already cracked our Dr. Browns Black Cherry sodas when he slinked in.
After we welcomed our favorite punching bag to the table, although he was confused; as he is used to sitting in booths, but that's another story; he pontificated about love, life, and the pursuit of food. He didn't even quote Mrs. Piggy. He did stand for the speech, which worries me some as he is starting to compile a Napoleonic complex.
Well, we were suitably impressed with the speech, and even the servers seemed impressed. When it came time to order Brother Rice and I dove into the Hertel and Colvin named sandwich. It consisted of Corned beef, Roast beef brisket, and pastrami, with coleslaw on top, served on rye bread. The Commish had something called the "Sally" or something, witch kinda fits him. It was roast beef, turkey and corned beef, on rye.
As always when you dine in at Mastman's, the tub of pickles and sauerkraut were served before our food arrived. The pickles were excellent and the kraut nice and sour. Brother Rice and I had two helping each, while the Commish watched in sullen silence, all the while plotting his revolt.
Our food arrived and we were all taken aback by the size of the sandwiches. They had to be at least three inches of meat on each one. The Hertel and Colvin was great, the corned beef, pastrami and roast beef were all very lean and flavorful. The rye bread was uncommonly fresh. Commissioner Corky seemed to enjoy his "Sally" although he had problems keeping it on the bread, and off his clothes, his plate, the floor, you get the idea.
I was just able to finish my sandwich, while Brother Rice and the Commish had about half of theirs left.
You need to bring your appetite when you venture to Mastman's.
All in all it was a great lunch; the weather was fine, as were the sights of the city outside the window.
Mastman's costs a little more than some small lunch places, about $10.00 each. The quantity, caliber of the food, as well as the authentic deli atmosphere is more than worth it.
I give Mastman's four forks up.
Until the pastrami joins the army, keep on Greasin.
