I am actually from Ely, and Northern Grounds is my favorite place to eat when I am home. The food is always great, and the atmosphere is casual and inviting. If only Northern Grounds would open a cafe in the Twin Cities... |

The roast beef panni is the best sandwich I have had in my life. I also loved the up-north feel of the restaurant. |

For a quick sandwich, designer coffee, a bagel or an ice cream cone, stop by Northern Grounds, in the busy corner area of Central and Sheridan in downtown Ely.
Lunch consists of some special sandwiches, the soup of the day, or some salads. Unfortunately, the dressing comes in a pouch. The salad is accompanied by a choice of bread. I chose a whole-wheat bagel with cream cheese which was great.
The decor is a light pine - some booths are also crafted of wood. There is a delightful deck in the summer.
Service consists of ordering at the counter and then, when your name is called, picking up your dishes. Bussing is also your responsibility, although an employee came by and asked if I would like my dishes bussed, which I greatly appreciated.
A vegetarian salad and a cup of green tea came to over $8, which I thought a bit steep. |
